Following the groundbreaking, (wave-making?) announcement of Carnival Corporation's Ocean Medallion cruise technology, the company has revealed a new component: Ocean Tagalong.
Carnival describes Ocean Tagalong via press release as a "customizable digital companion that will interact with guests on Ocean Medallion vacations as well as represent them in interactive games."
The Ocean Medallion personalized platform is an all-encompassing digital cruise concierge and wearable technology, with Ocean Tagalong as essentially one of its individual software features.
When a guest first creates a profile for their Ocean Medallion experience via Ocean Compass, a Tagalong digital companion (i.e. avatar of sorts) is also assigned. Users can choose either a Sea Turtle, Seahorse or Butterfly Fish and customize them with body shape, color, pattern, marks (like tattoos) and more.
These companions then follow each guest from registration to the end of the voyage, as well as later on future cruises.
Animated Tagalongs show up online and onboard in guest profiles, interactive PlayOcean games and onboard Ocean Portals. Plus, Tagalongs evolve throughout a voyage, taking on the personality and interactions of each guest as they collect achievement charms.
Tagalongs are specifically showcased in the big screen Tagalong Sprint game wherein guests' digital companions race along the ocean floor by tapping their Compass devices. The speed and ultimate success of each player is determined by their rhythm.

"The Ocean Tagalong is a great way for guests to express themselves and gives us the opportunity to engage them in unique experiences that amplify fun and stoke their competitive spirits," said John Padgett, chief experience and innovation officer for Carnival Corporation, in the press release.
"Driven by the Ocean Medallion, guests will be amazed at how their Tagalongs appear in dynamic settings around the ship and delighted by the ways their companions can interact throughout their vacation."
Ocean Medallion and Ocean Tagalong will first be available onboard Princess Cruises' Regal Princess beginning on November 15, 2017, in the Caribbean departing from Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
