Holland America Line has produced what it believes is the longest maki sushi roll at sea.
On March 30, chef Masaharu Morimoto—the cruise line’s global fresh fish ambassador—worked with more than 50 culinary team members to create the roll aboard the ship Rotterdam. The final product was roughly 90 feet long and included more than 55 pounds of sushi rice and 33 pounds of tuna.
Morimoto described the undertaking as a “thrilling challenge.” The chef sailed to the Caribbean to celebrate the launch of the new Morimoto By Sea premium sushi bar. The new eatery will roll out aboard Rotterdam, Koningsdam, Nieuw Statendam and Eurodam from now through June. (Morimoto By Sea has been offered onboard Nieuw Amsterdam since 2023.)
In addition, the cruise line announced that it’s expanding its single barrel whiskey program. What started with a single barrel of Buffalo Trace in 2024 will grow to include nine single barrels from various distilleries this spring.
The offerings include two barrels of Weller bourbon from Buffalo Trace, Weller Full Proof and Weller Antique 107. Holland America Line has also secured three barrels from Angel’s Envy, plus barrels from Uncle Nearest, Woodford Reserve, WhistlePig and Westland Distillery. They will be available across the entire fleet by May, while supplies last.
In addition the line will feature a peated single barrel from Westland in its “PNW Penicillin” cocktail created by bartender Sam Ross in 2024.
