A salmonella outbreak linked to whole cucumbers has sickened at least eight cruise passengers, reports the Miami Herald.
The travelers are among the 45 people in 18 states who have fallen ill after eating cucumers grown by Florida-based Bedner Growers Inc. Of those, 16 individuals have been hospitalized.
Health officials have not revealed which cruise ships they were sailing on when they became sick.
So far, the outbreak has affected patients in Georgia, Florida, Illinois, Ohio, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, New York, Virginia, South Carolina, Michigan, California, Kentucky, Indiana, Alabama, Colorado, Kansas, Massachusetts and Tennessee.
“This outbreak may not be limited to the states with known illnesses, and the true number of sick people is likely much higher than the number reported,” according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This is because many people recover without seeking medical care and are not tested for salmonella.”
The cucumbers were distributed to stores and restaurants by Fresh Start Produce Inc. between April 29 and May 19. The recalled cucumbers should no longer be for sale, but the CDC is urging individuals to take steps to avoid getting sick.
“If you have cucumbers at home and can't tell where they are from, throw them away,” per the CDC. “When eating out over the next week, ask if cucumbers were from Bedner Growers or Fresh Start Produce Sales Inc.”
