Norwegian Cruise Line will install 28 scrubbers on six ships to help reduce air emissions and meet stricter federal environmental standards going into effect in 2015. Green Tech Marine will install the scrubbers on Norwegian Breakaway, Norwegian Dawn, Norwegian Jewel, Norwegian Gem, Norwegian Pearl and Norwegian Sun. The work begins in the spring and will continue through 2016.
Green Tech Marine also supplied the scrubbers on the line's Hawaii-based Pride of America last year and will deliver 10 scrubbers to the company's two new builds, Norwegian Escape and Norwegian Bliss, being constructed at Meyer Werft in Germany.
The scrubbers help cruise lines meet stricter North American Emission Control Area (ECA) standards going into effect next year that require a more expensive, higher grade of fuel with less sulfur.
Carnival Corp. also is installing scrubber technology on 32 ships operated by Carnival Cruise Lines, Holland America Line, Princess Cruises and Cunard. Carnival estimates the investment at about $180 million.
