On Sunday, September 28, ten people who had been stranded at sea off the coast of Quintana Roo were picked up by Royal Caribbean’s Enchantment of the Seas.
According to Riviera Maya News, nine men and one woman were transported from the ship to the Port of Mahahual in Quintana Roo, where the National Migration Institute took them into Naval Health Personnel care, where they were assessed for injuries and identified.
The shipwreck victims were not Mexican nationals.
The Secretaría de Marina said in a statement that “naval personnel, in coordination with the Instituto Nacional de Migración (INM), provided support and medical care to 10 foreign shipwrecked victims rescued by the cruise ship Enchantment of the Seas in the Caribbean Sea, off the coast of Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo…
“Upon arrival, the shipwrecked victims were assessed by Naval Health personnel, who confirmed they were in good health. Personnel from the INM also arrived at the scene to carry out the corresponding procedures for identification, protection and immigration regularization.”
Cruise ships routinely carry out water rescues when alerted to a ship in distress as part of standard maritime practice.
