San Juan, Puerto Rico is officially back open for cruise travel, and Royal Caribbean International is ready to take you there.

Following significant recovery that has been made at the destination since previous hurricane devastation, exciting sailings await departure from the island.

Rest assured, tourist areas have been restored-something I can personally attest to having visited the port over Christmas via the line's Freedom of the Seas-and the majority of hotels are also ready to accept guests. Most importantly, Luis Munoz Marin International Airport (SJU) is receiving domestic and international flights.

Specifically, 27 cruise ships called on San Juan in January alone. More than 120 hotels are fully operational in Puerto Rico as are over 4,000 restaurants and around 200 casinos and other tourist attractions. Plus, the city has electricity now. In fact, when last there, my wife, parents and I enjoyed a delicious lunch at Tijuana's Bar and Grill along the pier within view of the ship.

All this means, Royal Caribbean cruises are available from the island, and the line is next anticipating its seven-night roundtrip Southern Caribbean departures from San Juan on the aforementioned Freedom of the Seas. Its voyages are scheduled to embark starting in May 2018. Rates begin at $529 per person.

Then entertainment extends to Broadway-style stage productions in the Arcadia Theatre, a spectacular ice show in Studio B and fun parades and dance parties down the length of the impressive Royal Promenade. Film screenings, including 3D and poolside varieties, are also showcased.

Back in San Juan, there are plenty of shore excursions currently available too-nearly 60 in total. Guests can discover why Puerto Rico is known as "The Island of Enchantment" and "The Land of a Thousand Blessings" with a variety of tours encompassing those dedicated to food or based on biking, walking or Segway transport. Others include "Old San Juan / Old City shops," "Plaza Las Americas (Mall of San Juan)" or even "Yoga on the Green," to name some.

Also for those interested in assisting in humanitarian efforts on the island, Royal Caribbean International currently stresses the importance of tourism itself as a contribution to the regional economy, jobs and livelihood of its people. In short, it's time to take a cruise and make a difference in the process.
