Royal Caribbean Group’s acquisition of a 50% equity stake in Sandals Resorts could mark what one expert calls an “earthquake shift” for the travel industry, bringing together two major brands that have traditionally competed for vacationers’ dollars.

The deal, announced Wednesday, gives Royal Caribbean Group a significant foothold in the all-inclusive resort business while giving Sandals a powerful partner in the cruise industry. More broadly, it could change how cruise lines and resorts compete, partner and package vacations—and give travelers and travel advisors a glimpse of where the industry may be headed next.

Under the terms of the agreement, which is expected to be finalized in early 2027, Royal Caribbean Group will acquire a 50% equity stake in Sandals Resorts International, including both the adult-focused Sandals Resorts and family-centric Beaches Resorts portfolios, for approximately $3 billion.

The deal brings together “two iconic leading vacation companies to further strengthen and grow one of the most admired resort portfolios in the world,” says Jason Liberty, chairman and chief executive officer of Royal Caribbean Group, which operates global cruise lines Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises and Silversea, as well as a growing network of private island destinations.

“Together, we see tremendous opportunity to expand the reach of Sandals and Beaches Resorts and continue turning the vacation of a lifetime into a lifetime of vacations,” he adds.

Adam Stewart, executive chairman of Sandals Resorts and Beaches Resorts, echoes that sentiment, adding that the deal “gives us the ability to grow faster with a partner that shares our values of exceptional hospitality, long-term investment and the power of enduring brands.” The company operates all-inclusive resorts in Jamaica, Antigua, Saint Lucia, The Bahamas, Grenada, Barbados, Curaçao and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

“The future has never been brighter,” Stewart adds.

Both brands will continue day-to-day operations independently, with current reservations, resort functions and cruise operations unaffected. However, the partnership opens the door for deep cross-distribution and guest engagement opportunities. For example, the companies say they plan to explore joint marketing, streamlined cross-brand booking flows and potential integrations across their loyalty platforms.

For travel advisors who have spent years selling both cruises and all-inclusive resorts, the deal represents a major shake-up in the Caribbean travel landscape. While many see significant opportunities in bringing the two brands together, they also have questions about what could change—and what they might stand to lose.

“This is an earthquake shift for the travel industry with two highly successful and iconic brands having the opportunity to team up rather than compete,” says Stephen Scott, founder and chief executive officer of Travel Hub 365 and the Odyssey Travel App.

Scott sees particular potential in Royal Caribbean Group reaching Sandals’ customer base, noting that the all-inclusive company’s clientele overlaps with the cruise line’s target demographic. More specifically, the partnership creates an opportunity for Royal Caribbean to reach and convert travelers who might not otherwise consider a cruise.

“The new-to-cruise market sits right within the Sandals brands and tapping into that could mean big growth for a cruise line,” he says.

Sandals could also give Royal Caribbean another way to expand its growing presence on land, particularly through more beach clubs or pre- and post-cruise stays on islands that already have cruise ports and Sandals properties.

The deal might not necessarily be good news for Sandals customers, he says, because they love the Sandals’ pricing model and experience as it is—and likely won’t want to see any changes.

“They won’t want to be nickel-and-dimed while on vacation, and we all know that Royal can find revenue opportunities like no other,” he says.

There’s also a chance Sandals will “lose its vibe” by increasing the proportion of cruise customers, he says. But if Royal Caribbean Group simply opens Royal Beach Clubs next to each Sandals property, without affecting Sandals guests, “then it can be a win/win,” he adds.

He’s curious to see how other cruise lines react. But Scott guesses they will likely follow Royal Caribbean Group’s lead and try to partner with major hotel brands so they can offer similar options.

Stephen McGillivray, chief partner marketing officer at Internova Travel Group, welcomed the news, calling it an “exciting new partnership” with “tremendous potential” for travel advisors.

“Their vision of turning a vacation of a lifetime into a lifetime of vacations is music to a retailer’s ears,” McGillivray says. “It’s also at the heart of what great travel advisors do: build relationships with customers that span many trips and many stages of their lives. This partnership gives our advisors even more opportunities to create extraordinary vacations, deliver exceptional value to travelers and introduce more customers to both brands.”

Katie Lynn Reynolds, destination weddings lead and travel advisor with Travelmation, also sees the partnership as an opportunity to build on the strengths of two brands that are already popular with her clients.

“Both brands have demonstrated their strong dedication to the travel advisor community,” Reynolds says. “This partnership will strengthen their place in this market and I'm excited to see what they build together.”

Cruises and land-based vacations are often portrayed as separate and competing products. But for many travelers, they’re already part of the same trip. Against that backdrop, Laura Swanstrom Reece, owner of Reece Worldwide Travel in Palm Beach, sees the partnership as a smart move.

“The vacations our agency plans now are rarely just a cruise—we build in pre- and post-cruise stays often,” she says. “With Sandals' network of 20 resorts across the Caribbean now tied to Royal Caribbean, they can combine cruise and resort stays under one roof, capturing more revenue and creating a truly seamless all-inclusive Caribbean vacation from start to finish.”

She also points out that Disney has already proven the effectiveness of this model with its packages that combine theme park experiences with a Disney Cruise Line sailing.

“Royal Caribbean now has the same opportunity in the Caribbean, at a much larger scale,” she says.

Steven Griswold, who has worked with both Sandals and Royal Caribbean for more than 18 years as the owner of Pixie Vacations, is also curious to see how the companies will blend their offerings. Griswold says he can envision combinations such as a three-day Royal Caribbean cruise followed by four days at a Beaches resort—although he doesn’t expect most travelers to extend beyond the typical seven-day vacation length.

He’s also interested to see whether Sandals and Beaches will change their all-inclusive model or services under the new ownership structure. Sandals has a long history and many established traditions, and he doesn’t expect those to be tossed aside any time soon.

Even so, Griswold says, as with any new relationship, there is the “fear of the unknown.”

Similarly, when Cruise Planners travel advisor Jeremy Lee first heard the news, “his heart sank a little,” mostly because he wondered how the partnership would affect his Sandals Chairman’s Royal Club member status. But as he’s had more time to think about it, he’s now feeling “cautiously optimistic.”

“The only constant we have as travel agents is change,” he says. “Change will always have some growing pains but will likely benefit us all in the long term.”

Ultimately, the biggest questions travel advisors have may not be answered until the deal closes. In the meantime, the advisor community “will be watching this transaction and what this means for our guests very closely,” says Michael Consoli, an advisor with Cruise Planners.
