The operation to refloat the shipwrecked Costa Concordia will start July 14, the salvage team confirmed on July 9. The announcement came days after Italian police released an eerie video shot inside the ship about 2½ years after it struck rocks and capsized near the island of Giglio, killing 32 people. The refloating operation depends on the weather, and the start won't be announced until it actually begins, according to the salvage team's website.

Thirty tanks, called sponsons, have been positioned on both sides of the Concordia. When the refloating operation begins, the sponsons will be gradually emptied of ballast water with a pneumatic system, giving the ship enough buoyancy to float and a draft of about 60 feet. The Concordia will then be towed away by month's end to Genoa, where it will be dismantled and recycled. It will travel about 190 nautical miles at an average speed of 2 knots, taking an estimated four days.
