A Week-Long Road Trip Through Mexico's Riviera Maya

Embark on an exciting week-long journey through the fascinating Riviera Maya, discovering natural treasures and dream destinations at your own pace.

The Riviera Maya is a popular tourist destination in Mexico, known for its paradisiacal beaches, cenotes, Mayan ruins and rich biodiversity. A driving tour of the Riviera Maya is an excellent way to explore this region and enjoy all it offers.

Here is an exciting seven-day itinerary for a road trip of natural and cultural experiences in this beautiful region.

Day 1: Cancun

Arrive at Cancun International Airport, pick up your rental car, and begin your adventure in sparkling Cancun, where white sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters welcome you. Enjoy the vibrant nightlife and discover the rich culture of this city.

After dropping off your luggage at the hotel or resort, you can stroll around the hotel zone, visit Xcaret Park, or enjoy a night out in Downtown Cancun.

Visit: Playa Delfines is approximately 25 km from Cancun airport, and it will take 25 minutes to get there. It is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Mexico for its turquoise waters and white sand, ideal for relaxing after your flight.

Day 2: Tulum

Mileage Cancun to Tulum: Approximately 130 km (80 miles)

Driving time: 1.5 to 2 hours

Visit: Tulum Ruins are just 2 km (1.5 miles) from downtown. Explore this oceanfront archaeological site, dating from the post-classic period of the Mayan civilization, and enjoy breathtaking views of the Caribbean Sea from the cliffs.

Immerse yourself in the history of this walled city. After visiting the ruins, you can spend the day at Tulum Beach, one of the most beautiful beaches in the Riviera Maya.

Day 3: Cenotes

Driving time: 20-30 minutes

Visit: The Riviera Maya's breathtaking subway waters at Gran Cenote and Dos Ojos Cenote are an excellent option for swimming and snorkeling inside their crystal-clear caverns. Immerse yourself in the freshness of the cenotes and natural subway water wells. Swim in crystal clear waters surrounded by lush vegetation, a unique experience only the Riviera Maya can offer.

You can visit the Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza, one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World. After visiting the ruins, you can take an excursion to the cenotes, natural freshwater pools perfect for swimming, diving or snorkeling.

Day 4: Playa del Carmen

Mileage Tulum to Playa del Carmen: Approximately 65 km (40 miles)

Driving time: 1 hour

Visit: Quinta Avenida in Playa del Carmen is the heart of the city. Here, you will find stores, restaurants and entertainment in a lively atmosphere. It's also perfect for enjoying the nightlife.

Discover the eclectic Playa del Carmen, with its vibrant streets full of stores and restaurants. Relax on its soft sandy beaches or venture down the famous Quinta Avenida for a unique shopping experience.

Day 5: Cozumel

Driving time: 15-20 minutes, plus ferry time

Visit: Coral reefs in Cozumel, ideal for snorkeling and diving. Cozumel is one of the must-see places to enjoy the best sunsets in the Riviera Maya. Cross the turquoise waters to Cozumel Island. Explore vibrant coral reefs, relax on paradisiacal beaches, and soak up the relaxing energy of this island destination. 

Day 6: Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve

Mileage Playa del Carmen to Sian Ka'an: - Approximately 55 km (35 miles)

Driving time: 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Visit: The mangroves of Sian Ka'an, a protected reserve where you can observe wildlife, includes birds, manatees, and dolphins. You will find incredible beaches, coral reefs, cenotes, and options of activities to spend the day. Venture into the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, an ecological paradise.

Discover the diversity of fauna and flora as you navigate through canals surrounded by mangroves and enjoy the serenity of nature. You can take a boat excursion on the Bacalar lagoon, visit the Mayan ruins of Muyil, or enjoy the area's natural beauty.

Day 7: Akumal

Mileage Sian Ka'an to Akumal: Approximately 70 km (44 miles)

Driving time: 1 hour and 15 minutes

Visit: Akumal is known for its sea turtle population. You can snorkel and swim with these friendly creatures and enjoy the beach. Akumal is known for its crystal-clear waters too. Snorkel with these majestic creatures and relax on the quiet beaches, closing with a flourish an unforgettable week in the Riviera Maya. Akumal is a small fishing village. You can also visit the aforementioned Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve or take a trip to the cenotes in the area.

Book your accommodations well in advance and check road conditions before traveling. And since the vehicle is the protagonist of your road trip, here are some additional recommendations for everyone to travel comfortably and safely.

Tips for Traveling by Car in the Riviera Maya:

  • Rent a car with enough space for the luggage and people traveling with you
  • Drive carefully, as traffic can be heavy, especially in tourist areas
  • Beware of animals that may cross the road, such as turtles, crocodiles and snakes
  • Buy travel insurance to cover you in case of an accident or theft.

A road trip is an exciting experience and these recommendations will help you get the most out of your journey.
