Grupo Aeroportuario del Centro Norte, S.A.B. de C.V., or the Mexican airport operator also known as OMA, inaugurated a new international terminal building on Friday at General Juan N. Alvarez International Airport (ACA) in Acapulco, Mexico.

Acapulco, just one of the many Mexican destinations experiencing a growth spurt in tourism, has taken steps to modernize its international airport and to ensure it can handle the growing visitor capacity.

"The expansion of Acapulco's International Airport has made flying to the world's premier beach resort more convenient than ever," said Pedro Haces, president of the Acapulco Destination Marketing Office. "Our visitor numbers have been growing, with travelers coming to see new amenities like the XTASEA, the world's longest overwater zip line, and experience our gracious hospitality, cuisine and nightlife and our luxury hotels with views to the Pacific Ocean."

The new terminal building measures 204,514 square feet, an increase of more than 75,347 square feet over the previous facility. It is capable of handling 1.3 million passengers annually.

Built using the newest technologies, the new terminal features an eco-friendly infrastructure, while also enhancing the guest experience.

An expanded number of restaurants and cafes can be found on site, as well as artisan shops featuring locally made Mexican crafts. Visitors can also browse a number of stores selling liquors, wines and other alcoholic beverages.

The facility was also built to meet maximum security standards, including incorporating the latest advances in earthquake and hurricane resistance. Among the new features, the airport includes state-of-the-art scanners and a traffic light system for reviewing baggage; passport scanners and QR codes for immigration; and a Health Service office for inspecting imported and exported foods. The airport also comes equipped with an isolation room in case of emergent health crises.

More than 1.3 million visitors traveled to Acapulco in 2017, an increase of 117,530 visitors over the previous year.

Acapulco tourism infrastructure is also booming. More than $1 billion in new projects are slated to open by the end of 2022, including the new airport, a new extreme space adventure attraction, numerous hotel renovations and a new medical center.
