California has a
new State Park about 90 miles east of San Francisco.
Dos Rios opened
last week and is the first new
State Park in more than a decade for a state known for its lush plethora
of outdoor activities.
It is 1,600 acres
and the largest floodplain restoration project in
California, which already boasts more than 275 state parks.
“The
park itself is located on the Pacific Flyway, and we’re also adjacent to the
San Joaquin River National Wildlife Refuge. So there are a lot of interesting
birds and wildlife to see,” Park
Superintendent Paige Haller said.
Wildlife,
both in the air and on the ground, is abundant.
“Not only will the new park provide
critical habitat for plants and animals, it’s also creating opportunities for
people to improve their mental and physical well-being by having more access to
the outdoors,” Haller said.
State Park officials plan to keep adding
to the park, including greater water access. The public is invited to
contribute ideas to expand Dos Rios.
“We’re in a very unique position to be
able to build this from the ground up and really build it with the community,”
said Danielle Gerhart, Central Valley District superintendent.
California, of
