This time of year offers cooler temperatures perfect for exploring the region’s renowned wineries, many of which offer harvest-season tours and tastings. Visitors can enjoy the seasonal bounty at local restaurants, where farm-to-table dining shines with fall flavors, and attend events like the St. Helena Harvest Festival, which celebrates the area's rich agricultural heritage. The town itself, with its boutique shops, art galleries and historic architecture, provides a quaint and leisurely experience. Autumn is also less crowded than the peak summer season, making it an ideal time for travelers looking to experience the beauty of wine country at a more relaxed pace.

Celebration, Florida

This highly unique community in Kissimmee, Florida was originally designed and developed by Disney with the aim of capturing the essence of American small towns, emphasizing architectural beauty, walkability and a sense of local community. You won't need sweaters here in the Sunshine State, but with the milder autumn weather, it’s the ideal season for strolling through the town’s tree-lined streets, exploring the quaint shops and cafes, and enjoying the scenic walking trails around local lakes. Celebration really goes all out for fall, adorning the town square with festive decorations, offering pumpkin patches and holding special events like Oktoberfest, where visitors can enjoy live music, hayrides and autumn-themed activities. The town’s close proximity to Orlando’s major attractions, including Walt Disney World, makes it a convenient and quieter base for travelers looking to enjoy the theme parks without staying amid the hustle and bustle.

Part of South Carolina’s Olde English District, Rock Hill offers a delightful mix of outdoor beauty, cultural experiences and seasonal events during the fall. As the leaves change color, the city’s numerous parks, like Glencairn Garden and the Anne Springs Close Greenway, become perfect spots for leisurely strolls, hiking or picnicking amid the vibrant foliage. The Old Town district is particularly inviting, with its boutique shops, cafés and restaurants serving up seasonal dishes. Additionally, fall is a great time to explore nearby attractions like the Catawba River for kayaking or fishing and the local wineries and orchards that offer harvest-time activities. To make the most of spooky season, visitors can head to the Carowinds amusement park for the annual SCarowinds event, which runs alongside daytime activities like Oktoberfest, and Tricks and Treats on select nights from September 13-October 27.

Beech Mountain, North Carolina

In the fall, this high-altitude destination transforms into a breathtaking tapestry of autumn colors, offering some of the most stunning leaf-peeping opportunities in the Blue Ridge Mountains. One of Beech Mountain’s claims to fame is being the highest town east of the Mississippi River, making it typically the first place to see the leaves turn in all of the Southeast. Here, you can take a round-trip scenic chair lift ride that will give you birds-eye views of the spectacular fall foliage in five states: North Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia. It’s available on select days and weekends until October. Among the many scenic trails that wind through vibrant forests is one called the Emerald Outback, the gem of region’s hiking and mountain biking scene, which is not to be missed. On weekends, biking enthusiasts can bring their mountain bikes up to the summit by way of the Beech Mountain Resort’s chair lifts to soak in the famed 50-mile vista of scenic overlook. The season also bring the annual Autumn at Oz festival on three weekends in September, which immerses attendees in the magical Land of Oz. You can meet favorite characters from the story, browse unique arts and crafts, savor delicious food and beverages, and enjoy live performances. But, be sure and purchase tickets in advance, as the event is overwhelmingly popular around here.

Oenophiles will want to visit any of several wineries nearby, while liquor enthusiasts can sample spirits and moonshine at Grandaddy Mimms Distilling Co. and beer connoisseurs enjoy tastings at the new Blairsville Brewing Company. On two weekends in October, Blairsville also hosts its annual Sorghum Festival, which celebrates the town’s agricultural heritage with traditional crafts, music, activities, and food and drink.

Located about 45 minutes northwest of Nashville, this historic city offers an ideal blend of vibrant fall colors, outdoor activities and cultural experiences during the autumn months. Brilliant foliage lines the banks of the Cumberland River, which runs right through town, as well as local creeks, trails and byways. The five-mile Riverwalk, nine-mile Greenway, large public cave, and over 30 local and state parks offer prime spots for taking in the stunning scenery. With the season’s mild temperatures, such outdoor activities as golfing, fishing, hiking, rock climbing and mountain biking remain pleasant into mid-to-late November. The downtown area is home to historic sites, charming boutiques and local restaurants where you can savor seasonal Southern cuisine. Autumn is also festival season here, with events like the Clarksville Downtown Market, and the Rivers & Spires Festival offering live music, local crafts and family-friendly fun.
