Getting to the heart of Papua New Guinea isn't an easy task. It's one of the world's most hard-to-reach destinations as The Times' Jon Holmes discovers and writes about his experiences.
"'Expect the unexpected' is the given (and best) travel advice for anyone visiting Papua New Guinea. It's a country that's casual about everything, from plane timetables to customs regulations to automatic weapons," he writes in The Times.
One of the best ways to discover PNG's interior, as Holmes discovers, is on a river cruise, but he cautions visitors that this isn't just a walk in the park kind of a vacation.
"To be honest, if a fortnight in Spain is your idea of a holiday, then this probably isn't for you," notes Holmes. "But if you want to step back in time, into a world where painted men gather in huts to make peace with the spirits and women fish on the river banks, their babies clamped to their bosoms, get in early before the tourism dollar turns it all into a theme park."
Holmes sailed on the Sepik Spirit, a small, comfortable cruise ship that takes guests along the Karawari River in the northern part of the country.

"Head away from the raskols to travel deep into the jungles and you'll find PNG one of the most fascinating places on the planet," says Holmes.
