Travelers love Baja California Sur because it feels a world away, with its magical waters and dramatic mountains. However, the destination’s vibrant cities like Loreto are easily accessible and closer than visitors might think. Travelers can experience so much in one vacation, from world-class boating and sport fishing to some of the most pristine marine environments in Mexico. That means unparalleled opportunities for snorkeling, wildlife encounters or simply relaxing on stunning strands of beach.

The protected waters around Loreto are often referred to as the “Aquarium of the World,” and it is a favorite among divers, who come to explore more than 50 dive sites here, including special attractions like a sunken minesweeper. Additionally, whale watching has become a popular pastime here; from January through March, Loreto Bay National Park is a great place for visitors to see orcas, blue whales and humpbacks.

The city of Loreto itself features plenty of historic charm and has been designated one of Mexico’s “Pueblos Mágicos,” meaning the government has identified them as places that offer visitors cultural richness, historical relevance, cuisine, arts, crafts and excellent hospitality. The Jesuit Missions Museum here includes ancient garments, paintings, sculptures, photographs and artifacts—and details how missionaries arrived in Baja in the 17th century, when it was home to roughly 40,000 native inhabitants.

Visitors also love Loreto for its shopping, with a wide variety of unique artisan stores, featuring authentic Mexican handicrafts, silver jewelry, contemporary and abstract art, clay pieces, intricately carved wooden works, and colorful fabrics. Or travelers can seek out a quiet, wellness-focused trip, with local options like the Sábila Spa & Wellness Center or Las Flores Spa & Boutique.

Loreto and the region features a wide variety of festivals and events throughout the year. Some of the most popular include the Puerto Escondido Marine Tournament in May, the San Javier Festivities in December, Chocolata Clam Festival in June, Ruta del Mole Festival in January, La Mision Classic Yellowtail Tournament in April, Blue Whale Festival in March, Norra Mexican 1000 off-road race in March, Feast of our Lady of Loreto in September and the Anniversary of Loreto’s Foundation in mid-October.
