Finland Offers European Elk Tours in Wild Taiga Region

The Wild Taiga region in Kainuu, in Finland's northeastern region, appeals to wildlife enthusiasts and nature photographers. The evergreen taiga forests are home to the European elk, the largest member of the deer family found throughout Europe. The best season to catch a glimpse of the elk coincides with ruska, the autumnal spectacle which begins at the end of September. To encounter the animal, it's best to take a guided safari at dawn or dusk. Tours last three to five hours, during which clients may also spot the rare wild forest reindeer, the wild cousin of the semi-domestic reindeer.
