A tragic fire tore through a major beachfront resort in the Dominican Republic on Friday, leaving one person dead and forcing the emergency evacuation of nearly 1,700 guests.
Officials are still investigating what exactly caused the massive fire at the 4-star Viva Dominicus Beach by Wyndham, located in Bayahibe.
One woman, identified as Francesca Valentino, a 46-year-old Italian woman, was killed in the fire, the DAEH emergency service said in a statement according to Reuters. Three others were taken to the hospital with six more being treated on site at the resort.
Videos circulated on social media showcasing the flames engulfing so much of the resort property.
Guests were moved to other hotels in the area, and tourists activities in the town were unaffected by the fire.
