Definitely the most famous of the trails in the Peruvian Andes, the Inca Trail is far from the only one. For those looking to tackle something new, the Telegraph has some ideas for what to put next on your list.
There is now a one-day version of the new classic Inca Trail hike, for those who don't want to try the longer version or didn't get permits for it.
"New for 2017, the one-day Inca Trail trek I was undertaking gets you to Machu Picchu by midafternoon, avoiding the noisy scrum of the traditional four-day hike which passes through there early in the morning," writes Simon Parker.
Visitors can also get a taste of the Andes trekking the Lares.
"The Lares, as this trek is known, gives hikers the chance to see how Andean cultures have tamed this harsh but fertile landscape. Mountain communities of Quechuan potato farmers and llama drovers pass effortlessly as you haul yourself uphill through the thinning air," says Parker.

Another option - but not for the faint of heart - is the Inca Jungle Trail.
"The all-action option for adrenalin junkies, this route involves downhill mountain biking, zip lining, river rafting and quad biking," notes Parker.
