The Sea of Cortez, also called the Gulf of California, is an incredibly scenic body of water that lies between mainland Mexico and the iconic Baja California peninsula. Reaching 700 miles in length, the Sea of Cortez has been called “The aquarium of the world,” thanks to its great deal of biodiversity in its waters. Visitors to the region can enjoy the water though small-ship exploration, snorkeling, swimming, and various marine wildlife encounters.

One of the best ways to explore this region is through UnCruise Adventures, out of La Paz, a charming beach town that’s an easy two hours’ drive from the Los Cabos area. La Paz boasts local culture, excellent cuisine, and sunny beaches for relaxation. There’s even a  Jacques Cousteau memorial statue here, in tribute to the world-famous oceanographer who so loved the Sea of Cortez.

UnCruise Adventures allows guests to explore the Sea of Cortez on small, expedition-style ships. That means fewer guests and an emphasis on sustainability and immersion, so you can get closer to nature without feeling overcrowded. The company’s commitment to the environment means you are assured to treading lightly on this delicate marine world.

Here is a sampling of the types of fish, marine mammals, sharks, birds, and other wildlife that you can expect to encounter on an UnCruise Adventures at the Sea of Cortez:

• Vaquita Porpoise, said to be the most endangered marine mammal on Earth
• Migrating Blue, Humpback, Gray, and Fin Whales
• California Sea Lions, which are common along Isla Espíritu Santo; playful pups will even interact with snorkelers at times
• Several species of dolphins, which are frequently seen riding alongside ships or leaping in their wake
• Fish like the Gulf Grunion, Bicolor Damselfish, Cortez Angelfish, and the Giant Hawkfish
• Spotted Eagle Rays, Mobula Rays, and Giant Pacific Manta Rays
• Other marine life like the Chocolate Chip Sea Star and Gulf of California Sea Cucumber
• Bird such as the Yellow-footed Gull, Black Storm Petrel, and Xantus’s Hummingbird

With UnCruise Adventures, you will launch kayaks directly from the ship, snorkel beside playful sea lions, watch breaching whales, and explore protected coves that larger vessels cannot access, making meaningful memories with your loved ones.
