US Officials Uphold Most Severe Travel Advisory for Caribbean Destination

The U.S. Department of State reissued its Level 4 travel advisory for Haiti on Tuesday.

The updated guidance comes after the addition of a terrorism indicator. It reminds Americans to avoid travel to the Caribbean destination due to a variety of threats, among them kidnapping, crime, terrorist activity, civil unrest and limited health care.

"In July 2023, the Department of State ordered nonemergency U.S. government employees and their family members to leave the country due to security risks," according to the State Department. "Haiti has been under a State of Emergency since March 2024. Crimes involving firearms are common in Haiti. They include robbery, carjackings, sexual assault, and kidnappings for ransom. Do not travel to Haiti for any reason."

Even the most ambitious of travelers will have a challenging time reaching Haiti this summer. The country's main airport reopened amid the ongoing humanitarian crisis last May; however, the FAA extended a flight ban into 2025.

Cruise travel has also been impacted, with Royal Caribbean suspending port visits at Labadee "out of an abundance of caution."
