WHY IT RATES: Houston rose to No. 9 in Resonance's America's Best Cities ranking, highlighting its economic vitality and cultural appeal, with increased livability and prosperity driving population growth and tourism. —Janeen Christoff, TravelPulse Executive Editor

Houston solidifies its position among the nation’s top destinations, climbing from 13th to the No. 9 spot in Resonance’s annual America’s Best Cities ranking. This rise reflects the city’s momentum and economic vitality.

The 2026 America’s Best Cities Report now in its 10th year combines data and statistical insights with feedback from locals, visitors and future residents in three key categories: livability, lovability and prosperity. Resonance, a globally recognized strategic research company, explains that the goal is to “help cities see what’s working, what isn’t, and where to act next.”

Noting Houston’s lovability ranking, driven by its celebrated food culture, Resonance confirms visitors are choosing to stay in the city long term. “Houston is increasingly loud, local and coveted as a hometown,” the report concludes. The Greater Houston area added nearly 200,000 residents from July 2023 to July 2024, pushing the total metro population to nearly 7.8 million.

While the report recognizes Houston’s continuing affordability, it also took notice of the city’s thriving financial climate. This year’s report ranks Houston No. 8 for prosperity and No. 3 for large companies—specifically citing Chevron’s decision to move its headquarters to Houston, Port Houston’s record shipping volumes, and a new hydrogen initiative expected to create tens of thousands of clean-energy jobs in the region.

“Houston’s higher ranking reflects a strong city that is getting stronger every day. It shows that we are meeting our challenges and moving in the right direction. If we continue working together, Houston’s best days are ahead of us,” said Mayor John Whitmire.

Infrastructure upgrades at Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), the George R. Brown Convention Center transformation, improvements to Downtown’s Main Street Promenade pedestrian corridor, and a wave of new hotels and developments are all mentioned as key drivers strengthening Houston’s vibrancy and economic performance. These same assets also serve as powerful tourist attractions, helping the city welcome nearly 54 million visitors in 2024.

“Houston is increasingly earning its reputation as one of the greatest cities on earth,” said Michael Heckman, President and CEO of Houston First Corporation. “This ranking validates our strengthening global brand and demonstrates the incredible momentum we are seeing across tourism, economic development, culture, and quality of life.”

The study ranks Houston as a powerhouse for cultural attractions and live entertainment, highlighting its dynamic nightlife, world-class performing arts scene, and high social media engagement.
