Jamaican officials are lauding the U.S. State Department's decision to upgrade its travel advisory for the Caribbean island destination.
On Thursday, the department lowered its guidance from Level 3 to Level 2, advising Americans to exercise increased caution in Jamaica due to crime and limited medical services.
Previously, travelers had been advised to reconsider travel to Jamaica.
"While violent crime in Jamaica has decreased since 2024, it remains statistically high throughout the country. Tourist areas generally see lower rates of violent crime than other parts of the country," the May 29 update reads. "U.S. citizens should not expect the same level of health care available in Jamaica as is available in the United States. This includes slower emergency service response times and less availability of care for illness or injury."
The update comes two months after Secretary of State Marco Rubio visited the island to review the controversial Level 3 advisory.
"This is significant for Jamaica, and it is indeed an encouraging development, one that reflects the hard work and commitment and discipline that this administration has brought to bear in matters of national security and foreign affairs," said Jamaica's Prime Minister, Andrew Holness.
"Jamaica remains one of the most vibrant and welcoming destinations in the world, and we are pleased that our progress is being recognized."

"We have maintained open and constructive dialogue with our international partners, including the United States, and this outcome demonstrates the value of that collaboration," added Foreign Minister Kamina Johnson Smith, in a statement obtained by Reuters.
The updated travel advisory was also met with praise from key players in the island's tourism industry.
"This is more than a meaningful update, it’s a powerful affirmation of what travelers, travel advisors, and the people of Jamaica have always known: Jamaica is one of the safest, most vibrant, and genuinely welcoming destinations on earth," Sandals Resorts International Executive Chairman Adam Stewart said in an emailed statement to TravelPulse.

Jamaica continues to be a coveted year-round tourist destination and aims to attract 5 million tourists and $5 billion in spending in 2025.
