Of all the lighthouses along all the ocean coastlines across the world, he had to stay in a haunted one. But Marc Pointud isn't just looking to scare himself, he's raising awareness and restoration money for a French lighthouse.
According to Ilyass Malki of Vice.com, Pointud will spend 60 days living inside the lighthouse of Tevennec, located off the Pointe du Raz in Brittany, France. Not only is the structure located on an island in a treacherous portion of the coast, but there are also stories of the lighthouse being haunted.
The Frenchman is moving in on the 140th anniversary of the original lighthouse's construction. As the founder of the National Society for Heritage, Lighthouses and Beacons, Pointud is doing whatever he can to help the lighthouse of Tevennec survive and thrive.
When asked by Vice.com about what it's going to be like staying in the building and what he is hoping to accomplish with this 60-day mini vacation, Pointud said:
"There's no furniture. It's completely abandoned. I'm going to bring a couple of bits and pieces - a bed, a chair, a table, food, and some stuff to write with. It's going to be a bit like being a prisoner, I suppose. The lighthouse is fully automated, so I don't have to operate it or anything. There's no running water, no electricity, no heating. It's going to cost a fortune to refurbish that place. That's why we are crowd-funding this project."
The French government gave Pointud permission to renovate the lighthouse and to eventually live in the building, using it as an artist's residence. Despite legends and stories about the haunted nature of the island, Pointud claims he is not afraid.
While the original buildings were destroyed three times through the years due to the ocean conditions, the lighthouse has been a staple of the area since 1875. Legend says the first guard to occupy the island was Henri Guezennec and he went completely insane.
Over the history of the lighthouse, 23 guards have spent time on the island, with stories and rumors of men losing their minds, untimely deaths, and ghosts. While restoring the building is Pointud's goal, this could be a very scary 60 days.
