More than 39 million passengers
traveled on national and international flights into and within Mexico between
January and April of this year, according to Ministry of Tourism data. Passenger
capacity on domestic flights increased by 16.8 percent while international
flight capacity grew by 19.9 compared with the same period in pre-pandemic 2019.
A total of 39,893,000 million traveled
on Mexico flights said Miguel Torruco Marqués, secretary of
tourism. Domestic flight passengers totaled 19,111,000 passengers, while
20,782,000 passengers traveled on international flights.
American Airlines and United
Airlines carried 4,849,000 passengers as the U.S. airlines with the most passengers
on Mexico flights, a seven percent increase over the same period in 2023 and a
50 percent increase over 2019.
North America represents the
largest share of Mexico flights, with 87 percent of all international departures.
U.S. flights carried 10,351,000 in the first quarter of 2024, an 8.4 percent increase
over 2023.
"Without air connectivity there is
no tourism,” said Torruco, “which is why, in the current administration, the
increase in routes and frequencies from different international markets has
been promoted, as well as the diversification of the tourism product.”
