Fortunately for travelers, Winter Storm Octavia is making its way out to sea. However, not before crippling travel across much of the eastern United States to begin the work week.
Octavia dumped heavy amounts of snow on some places, including 18 inches in eastern Kentucky, but it was the freezing rain and ice that caused countless headaches in the Southeast on Monday and into Tuesday morning's commute.
According to Weather.com, parts of Tennessee, Georgia and North Carolina were ravaged by ice, with the Atlanta area recording close to a quarter inch of accumulation. Memphis recorded nearly an inch of sleet, while Charlotte received about 0.10 inch of freezing rain.
As a result, major airports across the Southeast, including Charlotte Douglas International, Nashville International and Raleigh-Durham International have experienced widespread flight cancellations.
According to FlightAware.com, more than 1,400 total flights for Tuesday have been canceled nationwide as of 10:30 a.m. ET, with a majority of those cancellations coming at airports in the Southeast and others along the I-95 corridor.
Charlotte Douglas stands at 343 canceled flights, while Washington, D.C.'s Reagan National is reporting 227 flight cancellations.

New York City's LaGuardia and Nashville International stand at 191 and 175 flight cancellations, respectively.
Tuesday's lofty totals signal the third consecutive day of hampered air travel in the East. Monday's conditions resulted in 2,163 flight cancellations nationwide, while Sunday's total was 2,089.

The freezing temperatures filling in behind Octavia have not only complicated airport operations, but have also made traversing the roads extremely difficult as well.
And with more chilly temperatures and winter weather forecasted for the upcoming weekend, travelers in the Southeast and elsewhere along the East Coast can only hope that winter's unrelenting wrath is over sooner than later.
