Asia Pacific and Europe lead the way when it comes to safety for tourists heading into the busy holiday travel season.

Reykjavik, Iceland, is arguably the safest city for international travel right now, according to the latest insights from experienced American travelers. The most recent research from Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection also ranks places like Copenhagen, Denmark and Zurich, Switzerland, among the safest cities for foreign tourists in 2026.

Popular European tourist destinations like Amsterdam, Barcelona, Lisbon, Dublin, Venice and London also earn high praise from seasoned travelers when it comes to safety and security.

Other notable destinations for travelers prioritizing safety include Sydney, Australia; Tokyo, Japan; Seoul, South Korea and Singapore. These places are similar in that they boast robust tourism infrastructure and relatively low crime rates.

In the U.S., travelers believe Honolulu and San Francisco to be the safest for visitors. Elsewhere in North America, Toronto also has a stellar reputation when it comes to safety for out-of-towners.

Other safe cities gaining momentum this fall include Monte Carlo, Monaco; Valletta, Malta and Auckland, New Zealand.

Most Dangerous Cities for Tourists

When it comes to the most dangerous cities for tourists, the places that stand out typically struggle with violent crime and poor infrastructure. War and armed conflict are also unfortunately quite common in today's world and plague some of the most dangerous cities for travelers in 2026.

Caracas, Venezuela, is one such city to avoid, as are cities like Karachi, Pakistan and Yangon, Myanmar.

Although improving, Caracas has become infamous for gang violence and political instability in recent years, while Myanmar is in the midst of civil war and receives a Level 4 travel advisory from the U.S. State Department for a lengthy list of threats, including armed conflict, unrest, arbitrary enforcement of local laws, poor health infrastructure, landmines and unexploded ordnance and crime.

Some of the world's most dangerous cities also include Lagos, Nigeria; Manila, Philippines and Dhaka, Bangladesh, based on recent risk assessments.

Popular tourist destinations with difficult reputations include Bogota, Colombia; Cairo, Egypt; Mexico City, Mexico and Quito, Ecuador.

Beyond the aforementioned cities, Global Guardian identifies the following countries as the most dangerous for travelers right now: Ethiopia, the Gaza Strip, Haiti, Iran, Mali, Myanmar, Niger, Somalia, Ukraine and Yemen.
