This is the first in a series of stories that focus on advisors who specialize in destinations that are perceived as being geopolitically challenged. Here’s a look at how Egypt specialist Randa Nawawi, CTA, an independent contractor at Travel Adventures Unlimited and a member of Signature Travel Network, dispels myths about the destination.

How did you develop your specialty in selling Egypt?

Having been born in Egypt and spending many years living there, and frequently traveling back, specializing in Egypt as a destination was a natural choice for me.

I started by establishing connections and consistently updating my knowledge about the destination.

I achieved this through frequent visits, maintaining local contacts, familiarizing myself with various tour operators, learning about hotels, cruises and attractions, and staying abreast of the latest developments and news. Monitoring political, social and security conditions is essential to offer clients precise information and advice.

How do you allay client concerns about the destination?

I begin by conducting an initial consultation with clients to grasp their preferences and expectations. Gathering insights from their past travels and feedback is vital. I discuss cultural norms and customs to offer guidance on suitable dress codes, particularly in religious sites, and local etiquette to enhance their comfort during the trip. I also inquire about any health-and-safety concerns they may have, offering reassurances to address their worries.

How can advisors dispel misperceptions about Egypt?

One of the most persistent misperceptions regarding Egypt is safety. Many potential travelers still harbor concerns about political instability in Egypt. I address this by providing accurate and up-to-date information on the current conditions. I highlight the efforts and stringent security measures that were implemented by the Egyptian government to ensure the safety of tourists.

Unfortunately, media coverage often highlights negative events, contributing to misconceptions about safety. Egypt, like many countries around the world, may face security challenges.

However, it is not accurate to categorize it as inherently less safe than the US, for example. The safety level in Egypt, compared to the US, depends on one’s perspective. Overseas travelers often harbor similar concerns when considering a trip to the US. Many travelers visit Egypt each year without encountering any safety issues and enjoy the rich history and culture that the country offers.
