If you are already planning to or currently traveling around Italy, Milan is a must stop destination.
Milan may be known as the fashion capital of the world, but there is plenty to experience besides that. If you are one like myself, who loves beautiful historic architecture, great food, interesting culture, and on a budget, then this is a place for you.
After recently spending two days here, I discovered so many things to do. My favorite part of my stay was the Piazza del Duomo. At night, with the lights casting onto the Milan Cathedral, and glares reaching out from the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II into the center, it is truly beautiful. A second-floor restaurant, Terrazza Aperol, has a hanging balcony which gives you a view of the entire center.
During the day, Sforza Castle is a splendid stop-most of it accessible with free admission. For a nice dinner by the canals, head out to Viale D'Annunzio. There are plenty of restaurants and bars that allow you to step away from the heavily touristic parts of the city.
Out of many of the trendy tourist destinations in Europe, Milan is one of the cheapest. There are a few essentials to know to keep your day very cost efficient. First, the metro subway system offers a 24-hour card for about 4 euros (5 U.S. dollars), or a 48-hour card for about 8 euros. This allows you to travel as much as you'd like within certain city limits. Second, Milan is very accessible with the metro. So, there is no need to get a hotel or hostel in the city center. The outskirts will do just fine!
If you decide to fly, two airports offer top-notch accessibility. Bergamo Airport even offers a shuttle to Milan Central station for 5 euro.
