Three years after Uber reached an agreement with a local taxi union to operate in Mexico’s state of Quintana Roo, the rideshare app has quietly rolled out service in both Playa del Carmen and Tulum.
Mexico News Daily reported that Uber started up in the new locations on October 20, and that there were zero cost introductory rates for some users.
There have also been reports that Uber may be expanding into its Uber Taxi and Uber Moto programs in these two Mexican locations. Uber Taxi connects app users with traditional taxis and Uber Moto is a very low-cost option, where riders can hop on the back of a motorcycle instead of into a vehicle.
Especially for travelers who are interested in exploring sights like the archaeological areas of Tulum, the Uber app gives much needed flexibility, as well as an opportunity to save money from traditional taxis or renting a driver for a half or full day.
Local taxi drivers have expressed fear of being undercut and losing fares they count on to make a living. There have already been similar app-based rideshares in the region, such as DiDi, which generally offers fares of about half of what traditional taxis charge.
The region has also seen an increased amount of flexibility for travelers since the opening of Tulum International Airport in December 2023, which has regular and seasonal service from roughly a dozen airlines.
