The U.S. News & World Report has unveiled its list of the World’s Best Countries rankings for 2023, showcasing the best in the world based upon a comprehensive list of qualifications ranging from economics to cultural heritage and more.
This year, Switzerland retained its spot as the best country in the world for the sixth time. Canada is moving up this year, as the second best country in the world. Sweden and Australia both saw great climbs, moving up two and three spots, respectively, to make it into the top five best countries in the world. In fifth place is the United States, falling one place lower than last year due to a drop in the business subranking.

“A nation’s economy, as well as its potential for success in key areas such as trade, travel and investment, hinges in part on how it is perceived globally,” said Morgan Felchner, U.S. News executive editor, news and events. “The 2023 Best Countries rankings and report examine these perceptions as they relate to several qualitative characteristics, giving policymakers and residents of various nations a helpful glimpse into their country’s perceived value.”
Additionally, the best countries to travel alone this year are Spain, Greece and Italy. The greenest countries in the world are Sweden, Japan and Norway. The best countries for racial equality this year are New Zealand, Canada and the Netherlands.
