The United States Department of State reissued its travel advisory for Spain on December 23, leaving it at Level 2, the second-lowest advisory level.
The Level 2 encourages travelers to take increased caution while traveling in Spain. According to the State Department, the largest issues are terrorism and civil unrest.
“Terrorist groups continue plotting possible attacks in Spain,” the advisory explains. “Terrorists may attack with little or no warning, targeting tourist locations, transportation hubs, markets/shopping malls, local government facilities, hotels, clubs, restaurants, places of worship, parks, major sporting and cultural events, educational institutions, airports, and other public areas. Demonstrations are common. They may take place in response to political or economic issues, on politically significant holidays, and during international events.”
The advisory encourages travelers to avoid active demonstrations, always be aware and alert when in crowded surroundings or public venues, follow local authorities’ commands, monitor the news for any timely information and enroll in the department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program to receive alerts while abroad.
