Travelers have spoken, and TripAdvisor has analyzed the results. London is the top destination in the world based on an algorithm that took into account the quantity and quality of reviews and ratings for hotels, restaurants and attractions in destinations worldwide. The results were gathered over a one-year period.

"The Travelers' Choice Destination awards recognize the world's most beloved travel spots, based on feedback and booking interest from the TripAdvisor community," said Barbara Messing, chief marketing officer for TripAdvisor. "For those planning a summer vacation, now is a great time to plan a trip to one of these popular destinations where hotels are bookable on TripAdvisor for an average of $200 per night from June through August."

London was at the top of the list, jumping five spots from the previous year. Despite recent unrest in the country, Istanbul, Turkey, was in the number two spot. TripAdvisor acknowledged that they were aware of the recent spate of terror attacks in the country but "winners were selected based on the quantity of positive traveler feedback shared on TripAdvisor over a 12-month period" and it also noted that Istanbul's recognition was consistent as it has been a favorite among millions of travelers worldwide.

Marrakech was in the number three spot and Paris rose five places to the number four spot while Siem Riep rounded out the top five.

Prague, Rome, Hanoi, New York City and Ubud, Indonesia, all made the top 10 in that order.

TripAdvisor also ranked the list of the Top 10 Travelers' Choice Destinations in the U.S. Taking the top spot was New York City, which topped the list last year as well. Las Vegas moved up two spots to take the number 2 spot. Orlando made the biggest splash. The Florida city jumped 15 spots to number three on the list.

Chicago moved down two as the fourth best destination in the U.S. and San Francisco moved up one spot to round out the top five.

San Diego shot four spots up the list to number six and Honolulu really impressed visitors last year - the Hawaiian city moved up six to number seven on the list.

Washington, D.C., Charleston, S.C., and New Orleans rounded out the list of the top 10 U.S. destinations.
