Winter Storm Neptune is adding even more of the white stuff to areas already buried under a mountain of snow, Weather.com reports. Blizzard warnings are still in effect for Massachusetts, including the Boston metro area, Rhode Island, New Hampshire and Maine.
Parts of Massachusetts have received up to 22 inches of new snow. Logan Airport has announced a suspension of operations for the morning on Twitter, and limited service later in the day.
Neptune brings the most damaging winds of this latest series of storms, with gusts of 50-75 mph. Structural damage in the Carolinas was reported on Saturday, and more than 200,000 lost power that evening. Falling trees are a concern with winds this intense. High wind warnings are still in effect on Sunday from southern Connecticut to western North Carolina, New York and Washington, D.C.
Wind damage will be an issue on Sunday, especially in eastern Massachusetts. The snow will taper off Sunday afternoon for all locales except northern and Downeast Maine. Strong winds leading to blowing and drifting snow, and a frigid wind chill will continue after the snow has stopped across much of the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic coast.
Downeast Maine, eastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island may see 1-2 feet of snow total, and Boston may see at least a foot. These totals are in addition to the 3-4 feet already on the ground. North-facing eastern Massachusetts shorelines may see flooding as well.
The New York City area, the Hudson Valley, central and western New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, the Appalachians, and Great Lakes will see lighter snow accumulation.
Those traveling in affected areas will have a tough time. Weather.com reports roads may become "impassable" due to blowing and drifting snow from coastal Maine and New Hampshire Seacoast to eastern Massachusetts, Rhode Island, southeast Connecticut and eastern Long Island.
Flightaware.com reports over 2,000 flight cancellations for Sunday, plus over 1,000 delays, and that number is increasing. Most of these flights were to leave and arrive at Boston's Logan Airport, and all New York City-area airports.
