Remember Michael Jackson's controversial and posthumous performance at the 2014 Billboard awards?
The music icon's image appeared onstage, grooving its way through a variety of Jackson's signature dance moves, stunning audiences far and wide.
It was a spectacle made possible thanks to hologram technology, the same that famously brought Tupac Shakur to the Coachella music festival in 2012, decades after the famous rapper's death.
If you missed those performances, all is not lost. The world's first dedicated hologram theater is preparing to open in just a few weeks in Hollywood, California, according to Lonely Planet. It will specialize in showcasing performances from deceased legends.
FilmOn's Hologram USA Theater will be located in an old 1920s movie house on Hollywood Boulevard, the first of many locations the developer is planning to build across the country.
In addition, hologram events from the theater will be streamed globally, Lonely Planet reported.
Among the performers scheduled to be resurrected by the theater are Billie Holiday and Jackie Wilson.
"At Hologram USA we are re-imagining entertainment - bringing beloved superstars back to perform and providing unbelievable spectacles for our audiences," Hologram USA owner Alki David said.
The Billie Holiday show is an original drama focused on the singer's talent and tragic life, David explained.
Altogether, Hologram USA hopes to open about 100 theater locations across the country. Among the future locations already identified is an 89-year-old auditorium in Chicago's South Side. The hologram venue there will be named Avalon Regal Theater and is already being renovated to include the most current illusion technology.
Ultimately, David plans to beam live hologram performances to all the theaters:
"There are no limits to the kind of content and events that our hologram technology can bring new life to."
