Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” movie is expected to make waves this weekend, but the ripples will likely last long after the movie credits roll—for most people, with a bit of an urge to set-jet off to popular filming locations and historic sites relevant to Homer’s ancient epic.
We’ve curated a special list of the many tour operators offering incredible ways to immerse travelers in the world of The Odyssey, so if you’re one of the people who can’t wait to explore ancient Troy or hop on a jet to fly to a filming location, look no further.
Tour operator EF Go Ahead Tours just launched a special itinerary celebrating The Odyssey, called “Footsteps of the Odyssey in Greece: Kefalonia, Ithaca & Corfu.”
The original epic inspires the new 12-day small-group tour and departs first next June.
Travelers will visit islands and sites connected to Odysseus’s journey, creating a truly epic journey, visiting the Temple of Poseidon, the last sight Odysseus would have seen sailing for Troy, Lake Melissani, where the nymph Melissanthi was rumored to reside, the Necromanteion of Acheron, the place where Odysseus descended to speak to the dead, and, of course, Odysseus’s home island of Ithaca. The trip ends with a celebratory feast, just as the epic tale ends when the legendary man returns home.
Unforgettable Greece has crafted a new 15-day Greek Odyssey itinerary to celebrate the movie, having already seen a nearly 10% increase in Greece bookings. The private tour operator’s epic itinerary begins in Athens, visiting the Acropolis and the Temple of Poseidon, and then visiting Corfu, where the Phaeacians helped Odysseus in his return home.
Travelers will visit Meteora and Delphi and learn about the gods and their prophecies, before heading to Olympia, Kefalonia and Ithaca, where travelers will sail by boat to experience the island the way Odysseus did.
The entire trip is flexible, so travelers can extend their stay in any location, remove experiences, or add them as they like. They’ll enjoy private chauffeur transfers, boutique and luxury hotel stays, curated tours and all inter-island flights and ferry connections.
Audley Travel is offering an Odyssey-inspired trip combining Italy and Greece. The personalized itinerary begins in Sicily, where travelers will visit the place where Odysseus blinded the cyclops Polyphemus. Travelers will then visit the Aeolian islands, which were considered home to Aeolus, the keeper of the winds, whom Odysseus visited on his way home.
They’ll then head to Greece, where they’ll visit Athens, the Peloponnese, Nafplio, Mycenae and Corfu, where the itinerary concludes. Travelers will enjoy kayaking from Nafplio to visit the submerged remains of a Roman villa, visiting ancient Greek ruins and theaters, tasting locally produced wines on Mount Etna and much more.
