We are inundated by technology every day of our lives. Work can get to us through email, texting or calling our personal devices which we not only never leave home without, but also we neve put down. Life is one endless circle of information overload.
So this year, why not take a break and go off the grid. I don't mean like some Caribbean island. I mean really off the grid. Here are five places where when you get to where you are going, there is nowhere else to go, no one to call about it and no way to post your selfie. Good luck!
Ultima Thule Lodge - Alaska
There is only one way in or out of this beautiful location sitting within view of the towering mountains aside Alaska's Chitina river: by plane. Housing the dining room, open kitchen, and sitting room, the main lodge sits at the top of the hill with floor-to-ceiling windows to enjoy the view.
The lodge offers five cabins that were made using local timber and designed with the guest's privacy in mind. Each cabin is filled with elegant Craftsman furniture with and an Alaskan devotion to primal comforts. The rates here are all inclusive and include everything from food and drink to plane flights for sky safaris. This is truly wilderness living. There is no cell service here and no telephone. They have access to email only.
Cibolo Creek Ranch - Marfa, Texas

Located in the Chinati Mountains near Marfa, Texas, Cibolo Creek Ranch has a pretty big property line. Their overall surrounding tally up more than 30,000 acres. The accommodations are located in three separate forts, all meticulously following the architecture of the 1800s, complete with adobe walls, cottonwood beams and period antiques. The smallest of these forts, La Morita, is situated 45 minutes across the ranch from anything, does not have electricity and relies on oil and gas for heating and light.
Meals are prepared at the largest fort, El Cibolo, where guest swill also find a spa, pool, hot tub, conference room, and a recreation / multimedia room. Guided activities from horseback riding to rafting, hunting to fishing are all available.
Little Palm Island - The Keys, Florida
Located 26 miles from Key West, this private island is just what the doctor ordered. Accessible only by seaplane or boat, this resort was a best-kept secret for U.S. presidents and celebrities. There are no phones, no televisions, and no inconveniences.
Boasting a pool, plenty of beaches, library, boutique and marina, this oasis of seclusion also offers a fine dining restaurant at the resort serving breakfast, lunch, dinner and Sunday Brunch. This nearly six acres of paradise will make you stop and think, "Do I ever need to go back to my smart phone?"
Scottish Lakes High Camp - Leavenworth, Washintgton

This is how you become a real mountain man / woman. This camp is just that; a camp. No electricity or phone, no Wi-Fi, no nothing. They provide a cabin on the mountain and transportation to them. The parking lot is eight and a half miles from the camp and transportation rates depend on how much of the distsance you are willing to walk yourself.
They have cabins that can sleep between 1-10 people and they provide beds and for an additional charge, bedding. All utensils and cooking appliances are provided, but you are responsible for bringing the grub. If you want back country, this is the place to do it.
Frying Pan Shoals Light Station, Atlantic Ocean, North Carolina

Located 34 miles off the coast of North Carolina, the Frying Pan Shoals Light Station is an ex-Coast Guard light station that is being renovated and can accommodate up to 11 people in five twins and three queen beds in eight ocean view rooms. They supply the food and the kitchen, you do the cooking. Transportation is by helicopter or boat only. Being 85 feet above the water leads the way for great views, but to see the stars the best, head to the top of the 126 foot high observation tower. Now that is just awesome.
So there you go, kick away the smart phone, tablet and laptop, turn of the TV and kick back and relax. This is your chance to really get away from it all!
