It's been a chaotic summer for the international traveler. Some of American's favorite destinations are experiencing a variety of negative impacts for international visitors, but have U.S. travelers decided to stay home?

Not so, according to a recent Hipmunk survey. The results show that Americans are traveling farther afield and searching for more exotic destinations than ever before.

According to Hipmunk, international searches for U.S. travelers increased 32 percent as a share on Hipmunk this summer (searches that were run in either June, July, and through August 10) over last year, rising from 29 percent in 2015 to 36 percent in 2016.

Some popular destinations have declined in interest; the top three of which are Puerto Rico, Toronto and Cancun, Mexico. But some far-off destinations have received a big bump with huge increases in the number of searches.

Hipmunk's data shows that Papeete, French Polynesia, increased the most followed by Denpasar, India; Cochin, India; and Cebu in the Philippines.

Cities that saw the greatest decline all have undergone some sort of unrest - be it Zika, earthquakes, political problems or terrorism.

Port-au-Prince, Haiti; San Juan, Puerto Rico; and Istanbul all saw declining search interest.

Asia and Southeast Asia still remain one of the most searched destinations for U.S. travelers. The exotic allure of cities such as Cebu, Seoul and Phuket, Thailand continue to garner interest and several Asian destinations are in Hipmunk's overall top 10 list.
