Kids can hardly contain themselves when they see a carousel. Whether they are captivated by the whimsical animals or thrilled by the thought of spinning around while bobbing up and down, just about everyone has hopped on and taken the sculpted animals for a ride.
But the pleasure of spinning in circles does not have to come to a stop once you've reached adulthood, because the following five carousels are great for the entire family. From illuminating the night with bright colors to offering exquisite views, these carousels prove that no two carousels are alike.
Brooklyn, NY: Jane's Carousel
It's the front-row view of the Brooklyn Bridge that drives many to Brooklyn Bridge Park. But it is the 48 stylish horses of the merry-go-round that make New York treasure the ultimate playground. Jane's Carousel was created in 1922 by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company and initially placed in Ohio's Idora Park.
However, it was up for grabs at an auction in 1984 and once the carousel was in the hands of its new owners, Jane and David Walentas, it underwent a 27-year-long transformation before it was positioned along the Brooklyn Bridge Park's waterfront. Now preserved in a glass pavilion, children and adults alike can go for a horseback ride as the renowned Brooklyn Bridge and sparkling waters twirl right along with them.
California: Columbia Carousel
With a unique location that overlooks a majestic pool, the Columbia Carousel might just be the heart of Six Flags Great America; especially since it is a two-story masterpiece which makes it the world's tallest. This slower-turning carousel may not leave you dizzy, but you'll definitely appreciate the chance to take in the views at a more relaxed pace. But have no fear, thrill junkies, because each seat on this ride is destined to provide a ride to remember as music and flashing lights guarantee to put a smile on your face.
Ohio: Richland Carrousel Park
There are plenty of opportunities to saddle up at the Richmond Carrousel Park (yes, with two Rs), which boasts a sleek hand-carved design. And you can have your pick of circular fun while mounted atop any one of its 52 animals which includes: zebras, cats, horses, ostriches and much more.
Making its grand debut in 1993, the characters were fashioned to model the styles of G.A. Dentzel, a celebrated carver of the 1900s. And once you're here you must admit there is something quite remarkable about soaring and plunging from the Richland Carrousel, especially since it is the crowning attraction of the park.
Rhode Island: Crescent Park Carousel
When it comes to carousels in Rhode Island, many will say it's the Crescent Park Carousel that pulls at their heart strings. That's because there's rarely a moment a child isn't spellbound by the intricately designed steeds as he holds on tightly while bobbing in harmony with the music.
Made up of a variety of 66 figurines, where the horse's tails are constructed out of real hair, this merry-go-round is a dynamic treasure that makes even the oldest visitor remember the excitement that is felt once the electricity kicks in and the carnival music and bright lights signify it is time to giddy-up.
