Luggage is a lot like any other purchase: You can spend approximately as little or as much as you want.

If you're dying for a designer bag or a Tumi, plan to shell out hundreds of dollars but, if you're flexible, there are plenty of ways to save. If you're into travel rewards, you can also parlay your luggage purchase into extra points.

How much can you earn? Well, it depends on what you buy, what cards you have and how creative you are:

Check Amex Offers

While the offers change all the time, Amex Offers is pretty generous with their store discounts. You can frequently find them good for $15 off $75 or $30 off $100 purchase at stores that sell luggage like Macy's, eBags.com and JC Penney.

These offers are available to people who have American Express credit cards and can be added to your account via online account management. Make sure to add any Amex Offers you want to your cards and don't forget to use your offer before it expires.

Use a Shopping Portal

Shopping portals also make it easy to earn extra points for your luggage purchase. Most airline loyalty programs offer a shopping portal, as do banks like Discover and Chase.

You can often earn an extra 2-10 points per $1 spent through the Chase shopping portal on purchases made at stores like Macy's, Walmart, Neiman Marcus and Kohls. Check for stores that sell luggage, then see how much you can save.

Stack Discounts

Like the options above? Don't forget that you can occasionally stack discounts for specific stores.

At the moment, for example, there is a $15 off $75 purchase discount on eBags.com through Amex Offers. At the same time, the Chase portal is offering an extra 5 points per $1 spent at eBags.com.

If you add the Amex Offer to your card then click through the Chase portal to eBags.com before you buy, you can snatch both the rebate and the extra rewards. (Hint: You don't have to use a Chase credit card to earn extra rewards for clicking through the Chase portal.)

Check Out eBags.com

Whether you have a rewards card that offers a shopping portal or not, you can still save money with eBags.com. The website offers discounts and competitive pricing on travel brands like TravelPro and Tumi.

They also offer frequent sales and coupon codes for up to 20 percent off.

Shop Clearance

This final tip is fairly obvious: Shop clearance. If you're not too particular about the brand or style of luggage you buy, there are some serious bargains to be had.

Macy's tends to have a huge amount of clearance luggage, both in stores and on their website. You can save money by checking the clearance section before you buy. Not only can you find discontinued luggage styles, but you can find special sales.

Because what you'll find may be random, clearance luggage is also an especially smart place to check if you're only looking for a single piece-like a carry-on or a computer bag.

Also, don't forget to check for coupon codes and shopping portal deals. Most of the time, clearance purchases still qualify for other discounts.
