The Loire Valley of France is a destination of pure fantasy.

Lush greenery covers rolling hillsides tucked between quaint villages that boast fancy foods and locally-made wines. Castles of varying levels of grandeur dot the countryside and make the place seem like more of a fairytale than real life.

While the Loire Valley isn't exactly known as a place to take your kids, there's plenty to do and see for children, including those breathtaking castles from a time when real lords and ladies ruled the surrounding fertile lands.

Here are some tips to see the Loire Valley with kids for less while still having fun:

Rent a Car and See Castles

Because the Loire Valley of France is mostly made up of countryside, renting a car is the way to go. Fortunately, this option is fairly cheap whether you rent locally or pick up a car from the airport in Paris.

Castles aren't that expensive to visit, and kids are free at some spots you might see. Visiting the glorious Chateau of Chambord, for example, costs just 11 euros per adult and nothing for kids. You can easily spend hours exploring the chateaus' interior levels and gardens, making this chateau a particularly smart way to use your funds.

The chateau of Clos Luce, located in scenic Amboise, is another good option. As Leonardo da Vinci's last residence, the mansion is steeped in history and a good way to bring your children's schoolbook lessons to life.

Fortunately, adult tickets are only 15.50 euros and kids under 7 are free.

Choose Dining Options Carefully

One of the Loire Valley's best perks is access to the area's amazing cuisine. Picture rich meals filled with creamy pastas and meats, starting with escargot and ending with an assortment of locally-curated cheeses. (And wine-lots of wine.)

Unfortunately, the Loire Valley isn't known for its tot-sized culinary offerings. In many restaurants, you'll find a single child's option or none at all. If your kid is picky, having only one option to choose from may not work. And if there is no child option, you might be forced to pay adult prices for a child's meal.

The best way to ensure your dining experience is affordable and enjoyable for everyone in your party-including the kids-is to check menus and reviews online before you go. If you don't, you could be in for an unpleasant surprise.
