Hawaii’s Hotels See Strong Start to 2018

2018 has barely begun, and Hawaii’s hotels are already seeing early signs of success.
According to the Hawaii Hotel Performance Report released today by the Hawaii Tourism Authority. Hawaii hotels statewide are reporting average revenue per available room of $241 (+5.4%) in January.
Meanwhile, statewide average daily rate grew to $295 (+4.9%) in January, while occupancy was similar at 81.7 percent (+0.4 percentage points) compared to a year ago.
“We anticipated January would be a good month for Hawaii’s hotels statewide given the additional airlift coming into the state,” said Jennifer Chun, HTA director of tourism research.
“Maui County’s results, particularly the Wailea region, were phenomenal in January. Additionally, the growth in [revenue per available room] and [average daily rate] for the other neighbor islands helped to elevate the overall averages statewide.”
This comes after a 2017 in which growth was just as robust for the Hawaiian hotel market.
Growth was driven by luxury class hotels, which saw major increases both in percentage and in total dollar amounts. Midscale and Economy Class properties saw increases as well.
Maui County hotels led the island counties in both total revenue per available room at $345 and the rate of growth (+15.3%) in January, driven by the rise in average daily rate to $434 (+13.5%) and a modest increase in occupancy to 79.5 percent (+1.2 percentage points).
TravelPulse’s Noreen Kompanik visited Maui and gave several reasons to visit the destination, especially the natural beauty of the area, culture of the people and the absolutely incredible sunrises. It’s clear that she isn’t alone.
Wailea, on the island of Maui, topped the state’s resort regions in overall performance, with revenue per available room soaring to $572 (+23.5% or $109), and average daily rate also jumping to $662 (+21.7% or $118) in January. Occupancy also rose to 86.3 percent (+1.2 percentage points), the state’s highest regional occupancy.
Scott Laird recently toured the Four Seasons Resort Maui in Wailea for TravelPulse and came away impressed, saying there is “always more to explore.”
