This past weekend was a rough one for the biggest roller coaster at Huntington, West Virginia's Camden Park as issues with the Big Dipper's drag brakes led the ride to break down multiple times, WOWKTV reported.
The coaster first got stuck on an incline around 4:15 p.m. local time Saturday. There were no injuries and workers were eventually able to return the coaster to the station. The Ceredo Volunteer Fire Department arrived on the scene to help provide water to the dozen or so stranded riders, who were stuck without shade for a little less than an hour.
Ride supervisor Shawn Wellman told WOWKTV that the coaster's drag brakes, which are designed to slow the ride down as it heads into turns, were out of adjustment.
Despite operating a series of test runs afterward and having deemed the coaster safe to ride, the Big Dipper got stuck again Sunday.
"My granddaughter was on another ride and she called me on my cell phone and said 'Mom we're stuck on The Big Dipper,'" park guest Deborah Mccloud told WOWKTV. "The guy went up there and pushed the buggies with his hands. She turned around and look at him and said 'Really?'"
"It is very scary," Mccloud added. "Two days in a row and a lot of times you don't even know about it."
WOWKTV reported the ride allegedly broke down on two more occasions, however there have been no reports of rider injuries and Camden Park officials have not issued a statement regarding the incidents.
