Visitors planning an overseas trip to Japan yesterday were hit with unwelcome news. Many of their flights had been canceled, thanks to multiple typhoons wreaking havoc over Japan.

In Tokyo, Typhoon Mindulle hit land at noon Monday (local time), starting near the nation's capital and moving along a northerly path into the Tohoku region. With winds up to 180 kilometres per hour, the storm powered through Tokyo and nearby areas, causing Narita International Airport to temporarily close its runways and its control tower.

In total, airlines were reported to have canceled more than 500 domestic and international flights into Narita. At the All Nippon Airways website, a notice is posted informing travelers that some flight delays will continue today, although the weather is expected to clear. Train service, including Japan's shinkansen bullet train, were also halted yesterday.

It is expected the storm will dump a total of 200 millimeters of rainfall on the country, and locals are being warned to watch out for strong winds, flooding, mudslides and high waves, especially along the Eastern part of the country.

The storm has caused dozens of injuries and one person has reportedly died as a result of those injuries.

The country has also been plagued by Typhoon Kompasu, which hit Japan's northern Hokkaido region. Although that storm has since been downgraded, residents of Hokkaido are being urged to take caution as Mindulle could potentially head their way and cause further damage on the region.

This is the first typhoon to make landfall in Japan in more than 11 years.
