In a new statement on its website that has replaced the former one, Southwest said it is "continuing to experience intermittent technical issues on southwest.com platforms, the Southwest Mobile app, and in our phone centers, as well as in airports across our system today."

The airline is now advising fliers to use airport kiosks to print boarding passes and bag tags when checking luggage in addition to arriving at the airport at least two hours before the scheduled flight time.

Southwest also said the number of delayed flights from this issue is up to about 450 as of 2:30 CDT.

Southwest Airlines is experiencing a number of flight delays due to 'technology' issues today, according to a news release on its website.

The issues are affecting southwest.com, the Southwest Mobile app, along with technology at reservations centers and airports across the carrier's system, per the release. Future bookings are being impacted and arriving fliers have to be processed manually.

As of 12 p.m., CDT, almost 250 flights out of the 3,600 scheduled to operate today have been delayed, the release stated.

Commenting on employee efforts related to fixes and workarounds, Southwest said in the release, "While teams work diligently to enhance the performance of our technology, our airport-based employees are working with customers on their individual itineraries," adding, "we apologize for the extra effort and delayed arrival of passengers and their baggage."

Southwest advises fliers in the release, "to arrive at least two hours prior to their scheduled departures to help minimize delays."

The Associated Press reported that several dozen people were crowding the Southwest terminal at Los Angeles International Airport, waiting for handwritten tickets.

Lengthy check-in lines meant missed flights for some passengers.

Emily Mitnick, attempting to fly from Denver International Airport to Detroit, told the AP she missed her 10 a.m. flight, even though she pulled into the airport parking lot at about 8 a.m.

Mitnick estimated the number of people lined up at check-in for a boarding pass was about 1,000. She said there was about a couple of hundred people a curbside check-in as well, the AP said.

Getting on the security line around 10:15 a.m., Mitnick simply ran out of time. "The clock was ticking and the flight took off," she told the AP.

Southwest has not responded to the AP's request for further details.
