February is not only the year's shortest month but in 2025 it turned out to be one of the quietest for travel advisories.

Here's a recap of this month's trio of travel advisory updates from the U.S. State Department.

Norway - Level 1

The State Department reissued its Level 1 travel advisory for Norway on February 3, reminding travelers to exercise normal precautions in the Scandinavian country heading into the spring season.

Notably, Norway's neighboring Nordic nations, including Sweden and Denmark, currently receive Level 2 travel advisories due to terrorism.

El Salvador - Level 2

Travelers should exercise increased caution when exploring the Central American country of El Salvador this spring due to crime.

Fortunately, the State Department notes that "gang-related activity has dropped significantly over the last three years. This includes drops in violent crimes and murders."

While U.S. government employees can travel freely during daylight hours, infrastructure and safety concerns forbid them from traveling between cities or departments after dark. The only exceptions are the route between San Salvador and El Salvador’s international airport and between San Salvador and La Libertad.

Burundi - Level 3

The East African country of Burundi—which shares borders with Rwanda, Tanzania and the now Level 4 Democratic Republic of the Congo—received an upgraded travel advisory on February 21 in response to the "ordered departure of eligible family members and authorized departure for non-emergency employees due to ongoing DRC, Rwanda, and Burundi border tensions."

Officials ask Americans to reconsider travel to Burundi due to ongoing military conflict and tensions along the borders with DRC and Rwanda, political violence, crime and health.

Areas that must be avoided include the former Central Market located on Chaussee Prince Louis Rwagasore in Bujumbura and Cibitoke and Bubanza provinces and Kibira National Park due to potential crime and violence.
