According to the Associated Press, 22-year-old Dean Steele was struck by a car east of Hamburg on the A24 highway near the Gudow rest area shortly before midnight Sunday.
German newspaper Lubecker Nachrichten reported the Scottish victim and his friends were seen by witnesses taking selfies near a central barrier before he was struck by an Audi A6 driven by a 73-year-old man.
Police said the driver had no chance to avoid a collision. The incident resulted in the A24 being completely blocked from 11:40 a.m. to 3 p.m. local time Sunday.

Steele's friends, aged 21 and 22, were treated for shock, per the AP.
"The men are clearly drunk and are currently not able to be interrogated," police spokesman Stefan Muhtz said via the Mirror.
Germany's high-speed autobahn highway system is famous for its lack of federally mandated speed limits, making it a popular attraction for car enthusiasts around the globe.
"We are supporting the family of a British man who sadly died in Germany on April 30 and are in contact with the local authorities," said a Foreign Office spokesman in a statement to the Mirror.
