River cruising continues to ride a wave of popularity. As travelers seek more immersive, destination-focused experiences, the industry is attracting new players, including Explora Journeys, Celebrity Cruises, Lindblad Expeditions and Trafalgar.

“We are just seeing the beginning of what river cruising can be,” says Michael Consoli, an advisor with Cruise Planners. “I’m excited to see how the river cruise segment continues to evolve with new players, especially Celebrity and Explora—both backed by bigger, well-established and well-funded parent companies that understand the trade channel.”

At the same time, operators are looking beyond Europe, where drought and low water levels on the Danube and Rhine rivers have once again disrupted sailings this year. Cruise lines are capitalizing on river cruising’s popularity by expanding into new destinations, from India’s Brahmaputra River to Colombia’s Magdalena. From India’s Brahmaputra River to Colombia’s Magdalena, here’s where river cruising is growing next.

Brahmaputra River - India

India’s Brahmaputra River is emerging as a new frontier for river cruising, as major operators look to expand beyond the traditional European market. Viking plans to enter the northeastern Indian waterway in late 2027 with the 80-passenger Viking Brahmaputra, followed by a second ship, Viking Ganges, in 2028. Its 15-day “Wonders of India” itinerary will combine an eight-day river voyage between Guwahati and Nimati Ghat in Assam with land stays in Delhi, Agra and Jaipur, giving travelers a chance to experience both the region’s natural landscapes and India’s best-known cultural landmarks.

“Since announcing our new river voyages in India, we have seen strong interest from guests eager to explore this remarkable region,” says Torstein Hagen, chairman and chief executive officer of Viking. “We look forward to inviting even more curious travelers to explore India in Viking comfort in the years to come.”

The growth isn’t limited to Viking. Scenic Group has partnered with Assam Bengal Navigation, which has more than two decades of experience operating cruises on the Brahmaputra and Ganges, with plans to introduce Scenic river cruises on the Brahmaputra by 2029-30. The move builds on Scenic’s planned 2027 debut on the Hooghly River in West Bengal and reflects growing interest in India as a destination for high-end river travel, with itineraries emphasizing wildlife, local culture and riverside communities.

“India offers extraordinary potential for luxury river cruising,” says Glen Moroney, founder and chairman of Scenic Group. “Our partnership with Assam Bengal Navigation gives us the benefit of deep local expertise and an established operating platform, while allowing Scenic to bring its international experience in luxury cruising to the market.”

Magdalena River - Colombia

Colombia’s Magdalena River is opening a new chapter for river cruising, with AmaWaterways launching the first passenger river cruises on the waterway in more than 60 years. The company introduced two purpose-built ships in 2025: the 60-passenger AmaMagdalena and 64-passenger AmaMelodia. Their seven-night itineraries between Cartagena and Barranquilla combine Colombia’s musical traditions, wildlife and riverside communities with visits to historic destinations such as Mompox, known for its colonial architecture and traditional filigree jewelry.

AmaWaterways is also investing in local infrastructure and partnerships to help bring travelers into closer contact with Colombian artisans and communities along the river. Rather than simply transplanting a European-style river cruise experience to South America, the program is built around the Magdalena’s distinct cultural heritage and the communities that line its banks.

The cruises are meant to create “lasting connections between cultures, celebrating the rich history and natural beauty of the Magdalena River and offering new opportunities for local communities,” says Kristin Karst, co-founder and chief brand ambassador of AmaWaterways. “We’ve seen locals lining the riverbanks, waving and cheering with joy as they see [our ships]. It’s a moment of pride, unity and shared celebration for us and the communities along this majestic river.”

Mekong River - Vietnam and Cambodia

The Mekong River is attracting continued investment from river cruise operators, with new ships and expanded itineraries bringing more travelers to Vietnam and Cambodia. Viking, AmaWaterways and Riviera Travel River Cruises have all announced new vessels for the Southeast Asian waterway, while brands like Avalon Waterways and Emerald Cruises continue to introduce travelers to the region through their own Mekong cruise offerings. The ships offer guests a way to explore destinations such as Ho Chi Minh City, Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, with excursions focused on local markets, temples, historic sites and life along the river.

Viking’s 80-passenger Viking Tonle joined sister ship Viking Saigon in 2025, while AmaWaterways’ 120-passenger AmaMaya is scheduled to debut in January 2027, joining sister ship AmaDara on the waterway. Riviera Travel is also entering the market with Riviera Alba, a 50-passenger ship expected to launch in 2027.

“This is a natural evolution for us,” says Stuart Milan, president of North America for Riviera Travel, describing the Mekong as “one of the world’s most enchanting rivers.”

Meanwhile, Emerald Cruises continues to offer Mekong sailings aboard the 84-passenger Emerald Harmony, with cruise-and-tour packages that combine time on the river with visits to destinations including Hanoi and Siem Reap. Avalon Waterways offers seven-night Mekong cruises between Ho Chi Minh City and Phnom Penh aboard the Avalon Saigaon, with longer itineraries extending to Siem Reap and the temples of Angkor Wat.

Nile River - Egypt

Egypt’s Nile River remains a major draw for river cruise lines, which are adding ships to bring more travelers to the country’s ancient temples, royal tombs and other archaeological landmarks.

Viking is adding new ships to its Egypt fleet, including the 82-passenger Viking Sekhmet and Viking Ptah, reflecting the destination’s growing appeal among travelers interested in history and culture.

“The Nile River is growing in popularity and books a year or two out,” says Consoli, the godfather of Viking Sekhmet and Viking’s top global-producing travel advisor. “This is ideal for clients who are interested in exploring the history and culture of ancient civilizations, to see the pyramids and also those who are looking to check off visiting the continent of Africa.”

AmaWaterways is also investing in the destination, preparing to introduce AmaNubia in November. The company, which also has AmaLilia and AmaDahlia on the waterway, has seen strong interest in its Nile itineraries from both travelers and travel advisors, according to Catherine Powell, chief executive officer of AmaWaterways.

“Egypt continues to be one of the most exciting destinations in our portfolio,” says Powell, adding that the response to its Nile cruises has been “extraordinary.”

Abercrombie & Kent is also launching the 64-guest Nile Seray later this year, followed by another new ship in 2028. The addition of a second vessel represents the company’s “absolute confidence” in the Nile’s enduring appeal, says Cristina Levis, chief executive officer of Abercrombie & Kent Travel Group.

U.S. Rivers

American Cruise Lines continues to expand its U.S. river cruise offerings with new itineraries and new ships that explore various waterways on the continent, including the Arkansas and Tennessee rivers, the Hudson River and more. It also continues to invest in the Columbia and Snake rivers, with upcoming ships and longer itineraries designed to connect travelers with the country’s history, landscapes and smaller riverfront communities.

“We see a lot of potential in the market, and we want to build into the demand and modernize the U.S. cruise industry,” says Charles B. Robertson, president and chief executive officer of American Cruise Lines. “When you say river cruises people think of Europe, and maybe only think of Europe. There are great rivers all over the world, and we’re focused on showing people that they can do it here in the U.S."
