To improve airport operations, Munich Airport has partnered with major travel technology provider Amadeus, adopting the Amadeus Airport Sequence Manager (AASM) to assist with flight departure planning, reduce runway waiting times and delays, lower fuel costs and CO2 emissions, and more.

Munich Airport, one of the busiest European airports with nearly 377,000 aircraft movements in 2014, has been developing Airport Collaborative Decision Making (A-CDM) initiatives since 2007 and has been recognized as one of the more innovative airports in the industry. It was previously using its own in-house airport optimization tool, but AASM was looked at as a tool to better improve airport efficiency, particularly when it came to de-icing procedures for departure sequences.

"Although we were already using a in-house airport optimization solution, we looked for a partner to develop a next-gen application that would include a de-icing module," said Michael Zaddach, senior vice president IT, Munich Airport, via a release. "Amadeus was best positioned due to their experience in the global travel industry coupled with their technology platform for airports. Amadeus Airport Sequence Manager contributes to taking our A-CDM initiatives further and brings the capacity of our runways to the maximum level possible. Ultimately, we are convinced that it will play a part in achieving operational excellence, taking Munich Airport to the next level."

Munich Airport sees its fair share of thunderstorms and adverse weather conditions, which limits windows for departure. In that respect, being as efficient as possible and having a strong de-icing solution is even more critical than it is for many other airports that don't have to deal with as much stormy weather.

Since AASM was recently deployed, Munich Airport has improved its efficiency in a variety of areas, according to Amadeus. That includes reducing runway waiting time by 50 percent, improving flight slot adherence by 22 percent and improving inbound flight delays by 24 percent. This has naturally both cut overall fuel costs and CO2 emissions, helping Munich Airport become more economical and green-friendly.

"Many airports today are largely constrained in their ability to transform the efficiency of airport operations, and are not able to share accurate information across all channels in a timely manner," said John Jarrell, head of airport IT, Amadeus. "We have listened to Munich Airport, one of the most innovative in the industry, to develop a solution totally adapted to airports in need of achieving operational excellence, regardless of their location or size. The deployment of Airport Sequence Manager has led to a shared situational awareness among all airport partners which has created a more integrated, intelligent airport system with some good initial results."
