Dear Tammy: Does travel insurance cover you to come back if there is a hurricane and you are traveling overseas and have to go back home?

Tammy: Great question. It really is important for all clients to understand exactly what their travel insurance covers when they choose to travel during hurricane season.

One of the most important concerns that summer travelers have is how any severe weather events will affect them during their travels. Those who choose to travel between June 1 and November 30 are traveling during the Atlantic hurricane season. Because weather events are completely unpredictable, travelers never know what's going to happen-which is where travel insurance comes in.

When it comes to travel insurance covering those who are traveling in a hurricane zone, one of the most important things they need to understand is that in order for them to be covered by a particular storm, they must purchase their travel insurance at least 24 hours before the storm is officially named.

So how exactly does trip cancellation for hurricanes cover those traveling during hurricane season?

If a hurricane happens before the trip, a refund will be made for any prepaid trip expenses that have already been made. If a hurricane happens during the trip, travel insurance policies call this a trip interruption. Most travel insurance policies will cover travelers for mandatory evacuations due to severe weather events, allowing them to go home early because their destination is no longer inhabitable.

Any destination located along the east coast of Central America or the southern coast of the United States is considered to be in a hurricane zone. This means popular destinations like Mexico and New Orleans are going to be much more vulnerable when a hurricane does hit.

It's always a good idea for travelers to purchase travel insurance as soon as they finalize their plans. And because there are a number of different kinds of travel insurance plans available for travelers to purchase, it's important that they understand all of the fine print so they know exactly what's covered when they choose to travel during hurricane season.

The key to traveling in a hurricane zone is for travelers to be as fully prepared as possible. And to understand the exact policies contained in the travel insurance so they know exactly what to do if they happen to be caught in a hurricane when traveling.
