Sports have long been a part of Houston’s identity, with a variety of professional teams to follow and actively root for. As one of America’s great sports cities, Houston is one of the few U.S. metro areas that is home to toptier franchises across nearly every major professional sport.

At Daikin Park, the Houston Astros have established themselves as one of the most influential teams in modern baseball, with World Series championships in 2017 and 2022. Just blocks away, the Toyota Center is home to the Houston Rockets, whose legacy includes backtoback NBA titles in 1994 and 1995. And at NRG Stadium, the Houston Texans anchor the city’s NFL presence, known for one of the most intense tailgating cultures in the country and a recent rebuilding era.

Houston’s passion for soccer comes alive at Shell Energy Stadium, home to Houston Dynamo FC and Houston Dash, teams that reflect the city’s international character and its natural connection to the world’s most popular sport. These clubs have helped transform the downtown area and the city’s East End neighborhood into a year-round sports and entertainment district.

This summer, Houston will be one of the hosts of the FIFA World Cup, the largest sporting event on the planet. NRG Stadium will host seven matches, including five groupstage games and two knockoutround matches. Highlighting these matches is a Round of 16 match on July 4, 2026, a symbolic date that unites America’s Independence Day with the world’s game.

The sports scene will only grow after that, as the Houston Comets WNBA franchise will return in 2027, after nearly two decades away. Tilman Fertitta, owner of the Houston Rockets, will acquire the Connecticut Sun and relocate the franchise to Houston, restoring the Comets’ name, identity, and legacy. The original Comets won an unprecedented four consecutive championships from 1997 to 2000, a feat unmatched in professional basketball.

With elite professional teams, the FIFA World Cup, and the return of an iconic franchise in 2027, Houston is uniquely positioned to deliver unforgettable sportsdriven travel experiences.
