Some have called Gran Canaria a “miniature continent,” because of its incredible diversity. This magical Spanish island, located in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Africa, now has nonstop connections from Toronto and Montreal, making the island more accessible for North American travelers than ever. Here are four reasons that your clients should consider Gran Canaria for their next overseas adventure.

Dynamic landscapes

Every day of your trip can look different, thanks to Gran Canaria’s variety of landscapes. Wander the golden dunes of Maspalomas on the southern coast before ascending up to Roque Nublo, the symbol of the island. Roque Nublo is one of the largest natural crags in the world, the hardened core of an old volcanic vent. And the island also boasts laurel and pine forests, as well as miles and miles of beautiful coastline.

One With nature

Almost half of Gran Canaria’s area has been named as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, an internationally designated area that is a protected zone to conserve habitats and ecosystems that are of critical importance. Beyond that impressive designation, the Risco Caído and the Sacred Mountains cultural landscape also holds UNESCO World Heritage status. And the island has also been certified as a Starlight Tourist Destination, meaning that it is one of Europe’s best places to stargaze. Gran Canaria has protected dark skies and offers a range of guided astro-tourism options. Seeing the Milky Way stretch overhead from here is a memory that will not be soon forgotten.

Unique culture

Gran Canaria isn’t simply an extension of Spain, as the island has its own history and distinctions, including pre-Hispanic heritage with cave paintings and architectural sites that can be visited. The capital of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria features a working port, 500-year-old streets, incredible beaches, and award-winning restaurants.

Gastronomy

For food lovers, Gran Canaria is a special place, with traditional flavors such as mojo (a sauce) and papas arrugadas (“wrinkled potatoes”) to its own cheeses (like like queso de flor). Plus, the local wines, grown in the volcanic soil, are loved by many. And fine dining is easy to find across Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
